Here We Go Again...

He's too hot, he's too cold.  He just won't believe it is him not the house which is 71 degrees all the time.  One minute he is in a short sleeve t-shirt and the next he is in his coat freezing.  Nothing in the house has changed.  I see how upset Dan gets which upsets me.  If only he didn't complain ALL the time.  Hopefully this next year we will be blessed with more patience - all THREE of us.

We've all done this...

Dad and I were talking a couple of days ago and he was telling me that (this happened a while ago) he was getting the water ready to soak his dentures and  pulled out his hearing aides and put them in the water instead.  He immediately pulled them out and opened them up to dry.  Funny thing he says they have never worked right since.  I don't account this to his age (93) because we have all done similar things.  Who hasn't put the salt in the refrigerator or the milk in the pantry when they had something on their mind?  That was a good day.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

Merry Christmas to my 2 followers.  I miss you guys and wish we could spend Christmas with you.  Love you and hope you have a wonderful holiday.

Here's the Latest...

Found out he can't leave his door open because the wood floor outside of his room is so cold.  So Dan closed his vent and he is now using his space heater as the only means of heat in his room.  Glad we have a security system with a direct link to the fire department.  Scary!!!

Good Day...

Dan found a cover that goes over the heater vent.  It will direct the air under Dad's bed instead of up the wall and onto his bed.  Hopefully, this will keep the "hot" air from burning his arms and legs.  His skin is highly sensitive.  At least that is my opinion.  He told me this afternoon that when he went into his bathroom to wash his face the heat from the light fixture burned his arms.  ???

Favorite Times

Some of my favorite times with Dad is when he comes to the kitchen while I am cooking dinner.  He tells me of the adventures he had growing up in southern Colorado.  For instance - he grew up in a cabin with a dirt floor.  During the winter when it snowed they would have to sweep the snow out when they got up each morning because it would blow in under the door.  Brrr... give me central heat any day.  Also, they didn't have a car so their transportation was horses.  I love hearing his stories.

Thoughts...

I have to add that I love Dad and I wouldn't have him living anywhere other than with us.  We all have our good days and our bad.  Thankfully most of ours are good.  I love you Dad; you are a blessing in our lives.

Day One of my blog - Good Morning

I decided to start a blog to help with the stress of living with my 93 year old Father-in-Law. Up until the first of this year it had been a breeze.  He was and is physically healthy.  How many 93 year olds do you know that take a daily vitamin as their only drug?  His problem now is he is forgetful, he has dreams and thinks the dreams are real, and he is hot; he is cold and insists it is the house not him.  Of course, my husband and I are comfortable at 71 degrees.

Yesterday, on my way to the gym, Dad stopped me and said we needed to do something about the heat in his room - it was burning his arms.  This is an on going thing.  We have central heat and air and he insists that the air in his room at night burns him.  Of course, during the day the air is fine.  I snapped yesterday and a was snippy with him and then left for the gym.  I apologized when I got home and told him maybe we could change his furniture around and see if that would help.

He got really dramatic when Dan, my husband came home from work.  He came out of his room with his heavy coat, gloves, and a hat with the hood of his coat pulled over his head.  He told us it was freezing in the house and we better bundle up.  It was 71 degrees.  We ate and Dan and I left for the gym (I do cardio in the morning and weights at night).  When we got home he was in a short sleeve t-shirt; still 71 degrees in the house.

This is a day in our lives Living with My Father-in-Law.  I usually bend the ear of my daughter or my sister, but then I thought that we are probably not the only ones dealing an older parent.  I am hoping this blog with be a stress releasing project.  That's all for now.  We will see what today brings.
